The Gay Men’s Counseling Community (GMCC) was founded in the early 1970's by seven gay men who wanted a support group for themselves and an opportunity to offer peer counseling to others.  We provide counseling services to gay male individuals and couples and offer occasional coming-out and personal growth groups.

Our original purpose was to provide an alternative to professional psychotherapy at a time when homosexuality was still considered a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Although the opportunities for gay-friendly professional therapy have greatly improved, many gay men continue to value the peer counseling alternative.

GMCC’s service to the gay community is matched by its commitment to personal growth and peer support for its own members. Through self-disclosure and feedback in a supportive environment, we challenge each other to grow towards greater self-awareness and wholeness. We view this process as integral to our work as peer counselors. It expresses our willingness to experience with each other the same challenges our clients face in their work with us.

The Gay Men’s Counseling Community currently consists of 6 volunteer peer counselors from DC, Maryland and Virginia.
